Ensuring that all aspects of a consumer's entry are satisfactory and checking that consumers are complying with the T&C's:

  • Identify whether users are inputting unfeasibly large numbers of codes, or a high frequency of code entry attempts, plus establishing where they may have obtained the codes
  • Appropriate response and action to suspected fraud e.g. freeze accounts via 'managed bans'
  • Rapid response essential to prevent hundreds of prizes being given out to fraudsters
  • Requires human input to check data; not possible to fully automate everything
  • Should fraudulent users be advised that they have been detected?
  • Users can legitimately have multiple email addresses and phone numbers; are these allowed?

Up to the minute information is available through simple processes such as entry forms, gathering information through Facebook profiles, capturing information offered by internet service providers, such as IP addresses and information relating to social media, and other website and viral analytics.

CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems and global databases are often used to ensure consumer data is retained in one central place and becomes an asset to the promoter for new and existing communications, often assisting with on-going engagement and future promotions. This is sometimes a key driver, but if fraudulent/non-genuine information is captured the data becomes less of an asset and more of an embarrassment.
